Continuing from where we left off last week, we are still in Morocco, visiting the factory and having the time of our life, eating more than we thought humanly possible. In case you missed it, we are staying at the breathtakingly beautiful Riad Dar Bensouda.

DAY THREE: MEET THE MAKERS

Todays blog, as promised in the video below, is dedicated to the skilled artisans who hand make every part of zellige tiles. It is such a tedious process that requires 100% effort and skill from the legends who make them. So here goes; day three in mesmerising Morocco.

Every step and process that goes into the making of zellige tiles is done by hand. From preparing the clay to chipping the shapes that make up intricate mosaic patterns, the guys sustain a skillset that was taught them by their fathers and that was taught to their fathers by there grandfathers etc. They work day in and day out creating the most beautiful and exotic mosaics that we sell to you in Australia and around the world.. The precision, skill, accuracy and time needed to produce these zellige is unprecedented. Seeing the guys in action was inspiring. It's a privilege to be considered "family" by them and in turn, to help them sustain their craft.

Check out the vid to see the boys in action and to see just how much effort and skill goes into producing these tiles. BUT, please excuse the order of my insta stories. There was obviously no wifi.. you get the picture ;)

Behind the scenes: Georgia takes on Morocco

Happy new year gorgeous followers! I hope that you have all had an indulgent holiday and have all enjoyed your little break from reality. So, I'm back in Melbourne after an amazing and much needed vacation in Sydney. How many of you are like me and are already dreaming about the next travel destination after being back home for approximately 15 minutes. SIGH. I'm sitting here longing for my next vacay and it's brought back so many good memories from my last overseas trip..

In September of 2017, Richie and I, along with Jesse, took time off to visit Morocco, braving the 32 hour aeroplane ride - which may I add, was actually 3 individual flights with hours in between, with a 14 month old, who, at the time had an ear infection and was on antibiotics - lets not go into the part that mummy and daddy left the bottle of antibiotics in the fridge of the first leg! ....

For 2 weeks, we explored the beauty that is Morocco, the country of my dreams and the place where I draw most of my inspiration from. For these 2 weeks, we wandered round the streets, marvelling over every inch that Morocco had to offer. We gorged ourselves on the most delicious and fresh food, explored the Riyads, Dar's, Medinas, rolling hills in the mountains of Marrakech and gawped continuously over the majestic architecture and designs. This trip was the best thing I could have ever done for myself - I was able to refocus and reflect on my life, all that I have achieved and all that I dream of achieving for 2018.

As I sit here in Melbourne and reminisce on one of the most needed and best holidays of my life, I feel compelled to share with you the highlights of this incredible journey. Like a true tourist, I lugged my monstrosity of a camera and my iPhone (for insta stories obviously) around with me, making sure that I could bring just a glimpse of the magic of Morocco back with me to Australia.

So ladies and gentleman.. without further adieu, I give you... Georgia, Richie and Jesse take Morocco.

DAY 1: HONEY I'M HOME

Our first stop was Casablanca. Having just survived several long flights, we arrived at the Sheraton, with one very jetlagged child. I was completely taken aback by the majestic beauty of the lobby. Just sitting there was a sensory overload. Sky high palm trees and ornate light fittings adorned the space with the sounds of birds chirping; this was no run of the mill hotel. And this was just the hotel lobby - if this was any indication of what we were going see, we were in for one hell of a time.

DAY 2: WHERE IT ALL HAPPENS

After settling in, eager and curious, we hit the streets in pursuit of the place where all the magic happens - the factory that makes my pride and joy, my zellige tiles. These are the very tiles that I design and import into Australia which have truly become one of my biggest passions (you can see more HERE.)

Seeing some of the completed orders packed onto palettes and ready to be shipped all over the world to places such as Saudi Arabia and America etc was extremely fulfilling. We left the factory with full hearts (and VERY full stomachs thanks to the best damn pastries I've ever tasted) and headed to something that I had been looking forward to for months - Dar Ben Souda.

Dar Ben Souda is quite simply one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my life. SO much beauty, history, passion and love lies between the walls. Gorgeous and light-filled courtyards and the sheer grandeur and scale of the space make this Riad a must-see..

That's all for today lovers but stay tuned for next week where we our fairytale story continues.. Have you been to Morocco before? What were your "must see's and do's?"

Day 7: Kasbah Bab Ourika

Picture perfect

Located in the Atlas mountains in Marrakech, is Kasbah Bab Ourika. The most picturesque, gorgeous and serene landscape I ever did see. With rolling hills, mountain peaks, a river and groves of olives, oranges and lemons, this place is absolute heaven.

Georgia Ezra_Kasbah Bab Ourika.jpg

I always preach about how important it is to reconnect with nature and ground yourself to the earth. I could not think of a better example of this then Kasbah Bab Ourika. Nature is incorporated in so many ways, from the endless views, to the abundance of greenery and natural sunlight all the way to the finer details of natural tiles.

5 ways to bring Kasbah Bab Ourika

into your home

  1. Invest in a gorgeous Persian/Turkish rug. These rugs are so practical - they are super easy to care for and will last for years and years. Splurge on the real deal or get a cost-effective, cheaper replica to add that extra dimension into the space.
  2. Pouf Party! Poufs are the perfect accessory. I always love incorporating them into a living room as an option instead of an arm chair. The perfect way to make you and your guests feel right at home.
  3. Go with a handmade tile. It is no secret that I am passionate about handmade tiles. They have the power to connect you to the earth and bring character, warmth and soul into a space. Check out my PASSION and other business - Tiles of Ezra, for best quality handmade Moroccan tiles! These tiles really are the best coming out of Morocco. And we ship worldwide - JUST SAYIN' :)
  4. Greenery and Terracotta Pots. Terracotta pots are my "secret agent" - they (much to many of my client's surprise) work seamlessly in any space, and in particular modern homes!
  5. Cushion the blow. Bring in a mix of bold, bright colours and patterns with your cushions. You'd be surprised at how well they will work together and bring charm to your home, especially if much of the space is neutral.

Find out what Richie whispered to me in bed last week....

Get your mind out of the gutter naughty, it's to do with sheets. The most comfortable, soft, gorgeous, sexy, delicate and may I mention healthy sheets ever.

Georgia Ezra_Purezone Sheets Georgia Ezra Healthy home healthy you, bedlinen bamboo and how this impacts your health

Don't underestimate the power of a good set of bed linen. Your bed is your sanctuary, the perfect place to revitalize and rejuvenate, binge watch a season of Netflix and even get a bit frisky with some in-between the sheets fun. So lovely people, I would like to introduce you to the best of the best, Purezone bamboo sheets. I always feel the need to share with you that I am in no way affiliated to the product and that I derive no benefit by promoting products on my blog. The things I choose to share with you are the things that I love and believe that you will love too!

Georgia Ezra_ Bamboo Purezone Sheets.jpg

HOLY SHEET I literally could not believe how amazing these felt on my body. The benefits of bamboo are endless. Bamboo sheets are incredibly soft and smooth on the skin and are a naturally hygienic choice; bamboo is antibacterial, hypoallergenic and anti-microbial.

On top of this, it is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world, making bamboo a sustainable, organic crop grown without the use of pesticides or herbicides. It is also great for temperature regulation, allowing you to keep warm in winter and cool in summer (PERFECT for Melbourne weather.)

I used to think that sheet softness meant I had to buy Egyptian Cotton with a high thread count, but boy was I wrong. I also had a misconception in my head that bamboo wouldn't feel or look luxurious but I was so wrong! I am a bamboo convert! Trust me, you'll be texting your friends to tell them how good the experience in your bed was, and I'm not talking about the PG stuff. Even Jesse couldn't get enough!

My bamboo sheets are from Purezone, they have an amazing range and they have certainly kept me as a returning client!

Styling your home like a PRO

Don't be afraid to get m o o d y

Sometimes all it takes is a moodboard -  having everything you like, together, right in front of you helps clarify exactly what you like and don’t like! Use Pinterest, Instagram, flick through magazines and collect your fave visual references. This will help you cement your own personal style and nail down exactly what look shows off your individuality.

The more styles the merrier

Don’t feel like you have to stick to one style. So many of you think that the items in your home have to belong to one, specific style (e.g. strictly scandi.) THIS IS SO NOT THE CASE. I often find that the most engaging and experiential spaces are those that tell a story whilst the most boring, standard and COMMON ones are the ones that feature a piece that everyone has. The places that resonate with me the most are in fact the ones that have a myriad of items from travel, inherited pieces from parents, one or two really stand out, WOW pieces and anything else that embraces individuality. Don’t be afraid to show off pieces that evoke fond memories. Invest in one thing that you really LOVE and make this a piece that really stands out. By having this statement piece, you really don’t need to fill the space with undesirable and ineffective clutter.

Quantity NOT quality

You are probably thinking WTF. But this is so true sometimes. Why not collect a few of the same, or even varying, jars, cheap vases or even a mixture of varying candles. This creates a striking effect, mood and ambience that will make your home look like it’s fresh off the cover of a magazine! Three vases looks so much better than just one. And remember, try sticking to odd numbers for the best effect.

Tray it up

Trays in the home = tres chic. Perfect for a coffee table, entrance foyer bench or even in a powder room. Pile up some books, add a candle, a small bunch of blooms or even an old perfume bottle and voila – you are already hot to trot!

Layer slayer

The more you layer the space, the more homely, inviting and comforting it becomes. Add that wow factor with a throw and some scatter cushions. There are tons of cheap and amazing options available and this can really help bring that extra dimension to your home.

Its the little things

Sometimes the tiniest details make the most dramatic and biggest statement.  Why not change up the door hardware. There are some seriously cool and unique things available today like leather door handles and tabs and unique finishes and textures. Incorporate these details throughout the house to make sure you achieve a cohesive look.

And lastly.. Have fun with it! Remember everything in moderation and don’t clutter. Don’t feel the need to fill every inch of the house, this will only make the space feel smaller. Please do not finish reading this and employ every tip I have given in every single room. Try out a few in different spaces and if you feel intimidated and don't know where to begin, I always say - Don't be afraid to go with your gut!

Give Your Rental the Glow it Deserves.. And LOVE Your Home!

Make your rented house a home

I know first hand what it is like to be frustrated when renting and feel like you don’t have control over what you really want to do with your home; the struggle between wanting to personalise your space, but not being able to. I rented for 5 years, and I always held back! I never used my nice crockery or tableware. I kept everything boxed up just waiting for that perfect home, and I can certainly say that I regret doing that, because it was undoubtedly the cause of a lot of internal dissatisfaction. We commonly hold back from buying good quality and expensive pieces of furniture because we feel like it’s a poor investment to put money into an item that may not suit a more permanent or purchased house in the future. However, not putting energy into your rental will find a way to creep up on you and cause frustration.

Ultimately, if you are renting a property it is a necessity to take advantage of your current living situation. You can do better and actually love your surroundings, even if they are temporary! You should not have to be frustrated and disgruntled every time you walk through your front door..

tiles of ezra moroccan tile kitchen splashback.jpg

This is a perfect opportunity to trial a variety of styles you like because it’s a temporary space that you can use to experiment, live out and personalise! Own your home (regardless if you actually do own it) and make it yours. There are loads of ways you can decorate or style your rental property keeping within the restrictions you have to work to, you just have to have an open mind!

you don’t have to spend big to see results!

There are so many minor things you can do that will revamp your rental and make it a space that you are genuinely proud of. Here are a handful of my tips:

  • Don't like your floor? Why not buy a gorgeous rug to detract from it! And if or when you move one day, you can easily find a spot for it in your new home!
  • DO NOT HOARD. Declutter and get rid of the items that you are holding on to but that don't serve you properly anymore. The more space you have, the easier it will be to find a good piece of furniture or objec
  • Bring flora and fauna into your home! Fresh flowers, planters and greenery can make the world of difference. Not only will this help you connect with nature, this will help you reduce stress and is directly linked to mental and emotional development.
Studio Ezra interior design dining room.jpg
  • Put your best photo forward..  Cute photographs and pictures will help the space feel far more homely, warmer and personal and are also a cost-effective way of decorating the space.
  • Mirrors help reflect natural light and create an illusion of more space. This will elevate the space enormously!
  • Purchase or put out coffee table books and stunning 'objects de art' that have personal significance to you. Don't focus on what is "in fashion" or what your friends have in their spaces; focus on the things that are important to you and inspire you. These pieces do not necessarily to have a high monetary value yet they will make your rental glow with personal style.
Studio Ezra Moroccan Mediterranean Living Room Design.jpg
  • Use your nice hand towels, crockery, cutlery and candles. Many people 'save' their stunning pieces for "one day in their own home." This type of thinking will only cause you unhappiness and angst. USE THEM TODAY! Feel proud to have gorgeous things in your home, even if you do not own it per se.

Look ON the brightside

There are definitely positives involved in renting.  With every home you rent, should come a more refined sense of what you want in your "forever home." Renting will help you to identify and know exactly what you want and need so when the time comes, you will be well prepared with clear-cut ideas and little indecision! Focus on what you want rather than what you don't want. This positive thinking will also improve your lifestyle with general energy to attract positive experiences!

Ultimately you need to look at what inspires you, reflects your own personal style and what would make the home a space you love!  In the mean time, I want to hear your best kept secrets about what you do to jazz up your rental? Hit me up in the comments section below!

Magnificent Melbourne home by Georgia featured on EST

It’s not every day that one’s work gets featured on one of the best design platforms in the business – EST magazine. I adore EST! It epitomizes stunning, contemporary, cutting-edge design and has always been a major source of inspiration to me.

I feel so fortunate to have had my design on this Melbourne home showcased. What’s even more special is that I had the opportunity to incorporate my gorgeous, mosaic tiles from my side project Tilesofezra (available at www.tilesofezra.com) into this project.

Be sure to take a look at this space that truly embodies what we love at both GABBE design as well as Tilesofezra!

How to bring Guatemala into your home!

We are in La Antigua, Guatemala!

THIS WEEK I AM SHOWCASING THE INCREDIBLE

————————————————————-

C A S A   S A N T A   D O M I N G O

————————————————————–

Casa Santa Domingo is in the heart of La Antigua, Guatemala, a beautiful city littered with magnificent colonial ruins and oozing with Spanish Baroque influence. The architecture here is rich with stoneworks and pastel facades and the archways and intricate details of the churches romanticise the city for locals and visitors alike. The whole city has been listed as a World Heritage Sight, signifying the cultural importance of its architecture.

At Casa Santa Domingo the style of the city carries through this 128 room hotel. Each room mixes pieces from local and historic Guatemalan fine artists with handmade textiles and traditional contemporary designs. Throughout the hotel you are lulled into relaxation by the sounds of the beautiful stonework water features around every corner.

Check out the video below to see more from Casa Santa Domingo:

Georgia’s favourite design elements at Casa Santa Domingo– the beautiful water features that are imbedded in the ruin walls and blend with the greenery that crawls up the walls. Subtly entrenched in the walls of various courtyards the water features are an intricate hero of the hotel.

Bring a piece of Santa Domingo to your home in the following ways:
1. Don’t be afraid to mix up your textures. Use brick, tiles and stonework together to create an intricate and personal design that will help give the space it’s own personality. Of course you should be careful not to over do it, but layering up textures can make for an interesting and hugely individual space with its own unique charm.

2. Use a Terracotta or clay tile for your flooring! TILESOFEZRA has a gorgeous terracotta brick tile - FL005 - which works perfectly as a floor or wall tile surface, Richie and I even used this tile in our very own bathroom.. so I first hand can say how much I love this tile!  Whats better is that I hold it in stock!
