The 411 on my favourite indoor plants

I have long been a sucker for bringing greenery into the home (waaaaay before it became super trendy and fashionable!) Bringing plants and nature inside has the incredible power to uplift mood, soul and spirit. I always make sure myself and the team at Studio Ezra incorporate greenery in the spaces we design to ensure we create the most healthy and experiential spaces. Obviously, we can't put just any plant anywhere and everywhere as it may not be able to live in the conditions of the space... So here is everything you need to know about my 5 go-to indoor plants.

Kentia Palms

I absolutely adore Kentia Palms! They do not need loads of sunlight so they are great for rooms that are on the darker side. They grow tall and not wide so they are also a great space saving option! Be careful not to overwater your kentia palm, watering it only when the uppermost soil layer is dry.

Olive Trees

Although olive trees are not necessrily indoor plants, I have always loved to bring them inside. This is totally possible however, they then need to be situated in areas that receive A LOT sunlight.. Such as in front of north facing windows. One of the main reasons why they are one of my faves is because they are soft and have an extremely calming quality about them. Oh and the colouring of their leaves is just stunning.

Fiddle Leaf Trees

Fiddle leaf fig trees are always a winner. Their oversized, large leaves are relaxed but architectural and beautiful. They make a statement but still manage to remain soft in their look and feel. They add so much warmth to the home. Make sure these get indirect natural sunlight and loads of it, they are sensitive plants and can be affected quickly and easily if not receiving the right amount of light. You may beed to move them around your home to find their perfect niche!

Yuccas

Now here's on you have seen but probably never known its actual name. I am obsessed with Yuccas! They are exotic, gorgeous and have low water requirements. Very durable plants!

Euphorbia Ingens

These indoor cactii are amazing as they are dramatic succulents that will grow to 2m high if they have rom. They are hardy and don't need much watering. These give that luscious greenery required and the height we all want in an interior! Beware, may not be the most suitable with young children. Youch!

Give Your Rental the Glow it Deserves.. And LOVE Your Home!

Make your rented house a home

I know first hand what it is like to be frustrated when renting and feel like you don’t have control over what you really want to do with your home; the struggle between wanting to personalise your space, but not being able to. I rented for 5 years, and I always held back! I never used my nice crockery or tableware. I kept everything boxed up just waiting for that perfect home, and I can certainly say that I regret doing that, because it was undoubtedly the cause of a lot of internal dissatisfaction. We commonly hold back from buying good quality and expensive pieces of furniture because we feel like it’s a poor investment to put money into an item that may not suit a more permanent or purchased house in the future. However, not putting energy into your rental will find a way to creep up on you and cause frustration.

Ultimately, if you are renting a property it is a necessity to take advantage of your current living situation. You can do better and actually love your surroundings, even if they are temporary! You should not have to be frustrated and disgruntled every time you walk through your front door..

This is a perfect opportunity to trial a variety of styles you like because it’s a temporary space that you can use to experiment, live out and personalise! Own your home (regardless if you actually do own it) and make it yours. There are loads of ways you can decorate or style your rental property keeping within the restrictions you have to work to, you just have to have an open mind!

you don’t have to spend big to see results!

There are so many minor things you can do that will revamp your rental and make it a space that you are genuinely proud of. Here are a handful of my tips:

  • Don't like your floor? Why not buy a gorgeous rug to detract from it! And if or when you move one day, you can easily find a spot for it in your new home!
  • DO NOT HOARD. Declutter and get rid of the items that you are holding on to but that don't serve you properly anymore. The more space you have, the easier it will be to find a good piece of furniture or objec
  • Bring flora and fauna into your home! Fresh flowers, planters and greenery can make the world of difference. Not only will this help you connect with nature, this will help you reduce stress and is directly linked to mental and emotional development.

  • Put your best photo forward..  Cute photographs and pictures will help the space feel far more homely, warmer and personal and are also a cost-effective way of decorating the space.
  • Mirrors help reflect natural light and create an illusion of more space. This will elevate the space enormously!
  • Purchase or put out coffee table books and stunning 'objects de art' that have personal significance to you. Don't focus on what is "in fashion" or what your friends have in their spaces; focus on the things that are important to you and inspire you. These pieces do not necessarily to have a high monetary value yet they will make your rental glow with personal style.

  • Use your nice hand towels, crockery, cutlery and candles. Many people 'save' their stunning pieces for "one day in their own home." This type of thinking will only cause you unhappiness and angst. USE THEM TODAY! Feel proud to have gorgeous things in your home, even if you do not own it per se.

Look ON the brightside

There are definitely positives involved in renting.  With every home you rent, should come a more refined sense of what you want in your "forever home." Renting will help you to identify and know exactly what you want and need so when the time comes, you will be well prepared with clear-cut ideas and little indecision! Focus on what you want rather than what you don't want. This positive thinking will also improve your lifestyle with general energy to attract positive experiences!

Ultimately you need to look at what inspires you, reflects your own personal style and what would make the home a space you love!  In the mean time, I want to hear your best kept secrets about what you do to jazz up your rental? Hit me up in the comments section below!

As seen on JS Health: Simple Ways To Reconnect Our Minds & Bodies To The Earth In Our Homes

For those of you living under a rock, Jess Sepel is absolutely dominating the world of wellness, nutrition and health blogging; she does so much to teach people how to nourish and take care of not only their physical bodies, but their souls too. You can read more about the incredible stuff she does here but for now I want to talk to you about something which I feel very passionately about. Jess recently invited me to share my insights on how to transform our homes into beautiful spaces that keep us grounded to the earth. Here is my two cents on simple ways to ground your bodies and your minds to the earth in your home.

Man was created in Nature, and as biblical as this all sounds, it’s the truth! When man was first created we didn’t have high rises and brick walls.. air conditioners or TV’s! So when we spend time in Nature it would be naïve to say we don’t feel rejuvenated and reconnected with our soul and core. Have you ever stared out into the vastness of the ocean and felt completely grounded. This overwhelming enormity of what we call ‘the sea’ reminds us of how small we are in this infinite planet and how little our problems really are.

Fresh flowers, indoor plants and greenery are so important to connect us with nature within an interior.

G-Tip

Bring Flora and Fauna in to your home!

Indoor plantation and nature is directly linked to mental and emotional development, reduce stress and improve concentration. The introduction of potted plants within indoor environments have proved to lower blood pressure, increase concentration, increase productivity, improve wellbeing, lower levels of anxiety and raise satisfaction of users of the space.

We all know the sense of nostalgia that is felt when we smell a certain scent; maybe a specific perfume or the smell of the initial drops of rain on a dry curbside. Associating smells to past experiences, there is something incredibly magical when we are taken back to long gone places and times in our life solely through our sense of smell.

Certain fragrances can result in how we feel and result in physiological functions, causing us to feel relaxed, reducing tension leading to a more motivated and excited state… the beneficial list goes on.

This particular sense literally affects areas of our brain function that directly relates with emotions and feelings and ultimately leading to our behavioural responses. HOW COOL IS THAT!

In our homes this information is gold, because we can literally change our experience within our spaces to reflect a positive end-user experience! We also have a serious power to connect us and ground us to the earth. Through the aura of a natural burning fireplace or the rich varnished oak of a new floor, or burning lavender oils, we are connected and reconnected with nature and innately brought back to our core essence of who we are as human beings without the noise that comes in and out of our lives and within our minds.

Second to this, certain fragrances and oils have the power to literally induce a state of energy and motivation leading to an all-greater productivity in our daily life. This golden information is miraculous because we hold the key to really dictate our footprint and daily outcomes in a direction we wish to go, purely by the smells within our home!

So whether it be a gorgeous bunch of flowers or even the scent of a wood fire burning, you won't regret bringing a lil' bit of nature into your home!
