Day 7: Kasbah Bab Ourika

Picture perfect

Located in the Atlas mountains in Marrakech, is Kasbah Bab Ourika. The most picturesque, gorgeous and serene landscape I ever did see. With rolling hills, mountain peaks, a river and groves of olives, oranges and lemons, this place is absolute heaven.

Georgia Ezra_Kasbah Bab Ourika.jpg

I always preach about how important it is to reconnect with nature and ground yourself to the earth. I could not think of a better example of this then Kasbah Bab Ourika. Nature is incorporated in so many ways, from the endless views, to the abundance of greenery and natural sunlight all the way to the finer details of natural tiles.

5 ways to bring Kasbah Bab Ourika

into your home

  1. Invest in a gorgeous Persian/Turkish rug. These rugs are so practical - they are super easy to care for and will last for years and years. Splurge on the real deal or get a cost-effective, cheaper replica to add that extra dimension into the space.
  2. Pouf Party! Poufs are the perfect accessory. I always love incorporating them into a living room as an option instead of an arm chair. The perfect way to make you and your guests feel right at home.
  3. Go with a handmade tile. It is no secret that I am passionate about handmade tiles. They have the power to connect you to the earth and bring character, warmth and soul into a space. Check out my PASSION and other business - Tiles of Ezra, for best quality handmade Moroccan tiles! These tiles really are the best coming out of Morocco. And we ship worldwide - JUST SAYIN' :)
  4. Greenery and Terracotta Pots. Terracotta pots are my "secret agent" - they (much to many of my client's surprise) work seamlessly in any space, and in particular modern homes!
  5. Cushion the blow. Bring in a mix of bold, bright colours and patterns with your cushions. You'd be surprised at how well they will work together and bring charm to your home, especially if much of the space is neutral.

You NEED this killer Kikki.K stuff in your life!

IMG_9742.JPG

Those of you who follow me on Instagram already know that I love a good Insta story.. I mean who doesn't, right? So you might have already seen one of my uploads from the other day about a gorgeous delivery I received from Kikki K. I just know that there are loads of you out there who, much like me, have a secret obsession with cute stationary and organizing tools.  So I just HAD to write a blog about it because these products were seriously too divine and necessary not to.

As hard as I try to be organized, I am not. Running several businesses as well as being a full-time mom and wife means I live a crazy, hectic and full on life (which I love!) but it also means I need things set out for me. I find that if things are written out in front of me, they become easier to visualize and prioritize. Sometimes I have so much on my plate that I need to smash through that I don't even know where to begin. Which is why the planner pad I received is so good. It allows me to order tasks according to their level of importance and makes the things I need to accomplish tangible and clear.

IMG_9679.JPG

The next item that arrived was a Dream Journal and to say I am totally obsessed is an understatement. The opening lines "Don't be pushed by your problems, be led by your dreams" speak to me more than I could ever describe. I have always been a dreamer. Dreaming gets me through every day and year and in all honesty, I would not be where I am today if it was not for a lil' dreaming. The journal has sections for goals, short-term dreams, long term dreams and inspiring quotes. If you are a dreamer, I highly recommend this journal! And it is so pretty-in-pink too. Totally functional as well as nice to look at. Love love love it!

I also received a "Paper book for every day inspiration." This book contains inspiring DIY projects and craft goodness for paper lovers. It is packed with quotes, stickers and just awesome things in general. Sometimes all it takes is a few clever words strung together in an inspirational quote to get your ass into gear and make you realize that what you wish for is actually easily attainable with the right attitude.

IMG_9682.JPG

The last (and potentially the best) thing I received was a gorgeous, leather notebook. The reason I love this so much is because I cannot survive without a diary. I need to write down everything whether it is online, in a book or on a scrap piece of paper. This notebook was monogrammed with my initials. So obsessed with it all.

Thank you for the amazing goodies Kikki.K! And to my readers, be sure to check out their new range. Easy on the eye but so functional too for anyone on the go! What stationary and organizing tools can you guys not live without? Let me know in the comments below! I can't get enough of this stuff!

Taking Out the Heartache when Designing: Georgia's Golden List

Most of the people I speak to are terrified of renovating and redesigning their homes, especially when they don't have much choice but to do it on their own. Budget constraints and various other factors restrict people from hiring designers to do their homes for them and this creates a lot of fear, anxiety and heartache. I totally recognise that renovating or refurnishing your home can be an extremely daunting experience to say the least – essentially you are gambling with unknown products, unfamiliar suppliers and huge expenses without being 100% sure that your final result will even achieve what you wanted in the first place. But.. in actual fact, the prospect of designing a space for you and your family to love, enjoy and call 'home' for years to come should bring about excitement and happiness! So.. what am I getting at?  I have the perfect tool to ease you through this seemingly cumbersome effort!

The Rituals I Can't Live Without!

We all have our own little things which we do each and every day that make us feel a little more like ourselves. These rituals are personal and differ from person to person. These are the things that I do, day in and day (or should I say night) out, that make me feel refreshed, revitalized, alive and grounded!

Morning Rituals

1.      I am entirely devoted to my body and my mind and making sure that in the first hour of my day everything starts with a positive is a MUST. Normally, Jesse wakes up at 6am so he comes to snuggle in bed with me where I am spoilt with cuddles, laughs and giggles. The minute we are up, I quickly make my bed. No matter what, my bed is made within the first hour of my day.. if my bed is not made, I feel scattered, disorganized, and messy! I always want to start the day on a positive!

Studio Ezra Georgia Ezra bedroom boho inspo.jpg

2.     I pop on the diffuser in my kitchen. Each day the scent is different -  today was lemongrass, eucalyptus and wild orange… Our sense of smell is massively underestimated! What we smell can completely trigger the way that we feel and ultimately effect our thoughts, which effect our emotions and therefore our energy. Aromatherapy is fascinating; I am no expert but I know enough to passionately push for the fact that scent can have an incredible impact on our mood, our emotional wellbeing and our health. So I take advantage of this daily and make this part of my morning ritual to ensure that there is productivity and energy in the way I face the morning.

3.     I boil the kettle and pour myself hot lemon water. I am very lucky that I don’t have issues with my gut or stomach but I care very much about my health in terms of food and the one thing that I know is very beneficial to do is to have a glass of hot water with lemon every morning before eating breakfast, so I treat my body to this.

Night time Rituals

1.      Richie and I love to cook together! Every night, after we put Jesse to sleep, we go straight to the kitchen to start chopping up some veggies for dinner. A sit down meal is extremely important to us; we have a small veggie patch in which we grow kale, silver beet, and an array of other herbs.. Every night we pick something from our garden. I think this always grounds us and makes us mindful of where our food comes from… which is so easy to forget nowadays with readily accessible products that come nicely package and washed!

2.     As my days are generally filled with a mixture of meetings, phone calls, emails to attend to and an 8 month old, nights are really the only moment I get to sit down properly, take a breath and get my thoughts together before the next day. Once I have finished doing my writing or last minute emails and work, I make it a ritual to take a nice warm shower and put lavender oil drops in the corner…this is so relaxing and I find myself looking forward to it every night.

Tiles of Ezra Natural Unglazed FL005 zellige moroccan tile.jpg

After this, I make sure the lights are dimmed in the bedroom. We have side pendants from India which when turned on create an extremely moody and relaxing space.

3.     I like to crawl into bed with tea, maybe sometimes even a dessert (who am I kidding.. I have dessert every night!) , and my iPad/book to relax and wind down. At the moment, I am watching ‘Girls’ and I am hooked! Tea in hand, a baby asleep and the lights dimmed low…It’s a moment that quite simply does not get old!

These practices, however small or insignificant they may seem, are little steps I take to ensure that I keep myself sane and happy! What are your favorite morning and evening rituals? I would love to hear all about them!

Your Perfect Living Room Part II

Last week on the blog I shared with you a couple of hot tips for your living room. Because I love talking (LOL) and also have so much to say on this topic I figured that one blog post just ain't gonna cut it. So here goes the sequel to last week's post.

SAY yes to a great rug and sofa

I am a massive advocate of carpet, being the daughter of THE carpet man in Sydney - Carpeteria, Newland Street Bondi Junction ( Ask for Jack! :) ), but I also love using other flooring materials. I much prefer to use a hard surface in a kitchen – a timber floorboard, polished concrete or large format tile and then run this right through to the living room. That doesn't mean you cant section off a space with a seperate flooring finish such as a carpet or an oversized rug - always oversized!   Not only does a rug separate and distinguish the area as separate BUT it also adds to the physical and aesthetic comfort of the living space.

I must stress that each space and each client is different, but for me a key furniture piece in the living room is a good, comfortable sofa. The shape, upholstery choice, and scatter cushions will make a world of difference too! Comfortable dining chairs/bar stools according to the design and a functional dining setting are also critical pieces.

Lighting is incredibly important to the atmosphere of a space. I always urge clients to hang pendants above their dining table or a wall hung, retractable light fitting that can be pulled over the table. Lastly, multifunctional furniture, such as side tables and stools that can respond with your everyday needs and lifestyle are PERFECT for smaller spaces.

fabulous finishing touches

Be brave with colour! Get in touch with your inner fun and use colour to highlight the key areas of your home. Do this with your loose furnishings/accessories OR emphasize the importance of a room with creating a feature wall. Paint the entire wall or apply bold wallpaper…if you balance this out with accessories that compliment the tone of the colour along with other neutrals throughout the room you, will find that it will speak out loud but in an elegant way. Another awesome tip I can offer (and this one is probably more relevant to the dining room) is to be courageous with your serving ware! There is nothing better than the excitement I see on the faces of my guests when they sit down to brightly colored and bold printed plates.. I like to buy separate plates and bowls (entrée, main, small and large soup size). Depending on the meal of the night, I will choose the colour range and style the tableware to suit. Its so much fun to bring colour into the dinner party this way!  Be brave to mix and match textures, patterns and prints.. Everyone should have a go!

Mirror mirror on the wall - Mirrors work wonders! They create a visual illusion that the room is larger than reality and they reflect any light that is entering the space that in result makes the area brighter! But I say play with your mirrors.. Buy frames that are circular, square shape or even doorframes, and use them as the basis as your mirror surround. Bring mirror into the space through furniture…or if you have the budget, mirror panels to clad the entire wall look incredible!

GABBE_livingroom

Lastly, why not try DIY vases and jars. I never throw glass drink bottles or glass jars out… You will find me using pickle jars for my nuts and seeds or flowers. I place them all around the house, not only in the living room. These are the small elements and features around the house that give a personal and hands on touch!

What in your living room inspires you or what issues are you struggling to deal with when it comes to loving your living room? I would love to help!

Your Perfect Living Room

What is it about the living room that makes it such an important space in our homes?

The living room is the centre of our home; our daily interactions are based around entertaining, dining, relaxing and residing which all takes place in this particular area of the home. It's a space that every member of the house feels comfortable, shares in happiness and engages with one another.

The secret to a great living room

Personally, I tend to gravitate towards living and kitchen spaces; for me, it needs to provide a comfortable environment to look at AND to be within. In addition, a sun filled area is imperative - I can never get enough sunlight in a living room. I definitely believe each individual has his or her own style and aesthetic, so in my opinion ‘personality’ has a big role in a ‘great living room’. Accessorize and use specific colours that suit your own taste. Whilst saying this, an open plan design allows the overall feel of the space to be more inviting and less cluttered. An open plan living room means an integration of the kitchen with the family living…and so, this would mean no separation between the two spaces. As the kitchen is the core of all ‘coming together’  and the heart of the home, it is really such a beautiful concept to combine the two areas into one.

When designing the layout for an open plan space, I always like to play with placement of ‘dining’ and ‘lounging’ spaces. As so much entertaining takes place around an Island bench AND so often around a coffee table, I like to look at working against the conventional placement of the ‘grand’ dining table adjacent to the kitchen area. In some cases, when presented with more space, I will let the open kitchen run into the living, offsetting the dining area. In other cases, I like to combine joinery of the living room into the dining space – e.g  A floating shelf becomes a bench seat for the table.

Screen Shot 2017-04-10 at 12.34.52 PM.png

I often find clients do not appropriately utilize the size of their space through the furniture chosen – We can successfully create illusions of how large or small our homes are by the furniture we choose to style with. Using items that are too small for larger areas or alternatively furniture that is too big for compact spaces can completely ruin a gorgeous space. My rule is to make sure you can comfortably move between furniture, there isn’t too much space but you are not trying to squeeze in between either.

Smaller, separate living rooms

In smaller areas, we need to remember we are not disadvantaged, we just need to get a bit more creative and wise with our designs!

An integration of joinery with dining works wonders. This can be as simple as creating a bar seat in your kitchen island to allow for a more casual dining. Don’t clutter and choose your furniture wisely. Buy pieces that can be space saving and multifunctional!

In addition, be careful with colour; dark, bold or strong colour schemes will make spaces appear smaller. My advice would be to keep things bright and clean and integrate those eclectic items you like in small doses, that way they can be seen and shown off.

I often find that clients don’t know their style. They love EVERYTHING and so they tend to overclutter, which ultimately leads to a cramped vision and takes away from each piece. I call it ‘CTC - Culling the C*P! If you over-accessorize the interior, you do a disservice to your space and to the pieces you treasure most! CTC!!!!

FABULOUS FEATURE WALLS

I love making something a feature in a living room. My style is such a combined mix of modern meets eclectic. I Love Spanish, Italian, Indian, Asian and Moroccan styles and I work these together with a touch of 1950’s retro and modernism. It somehow works!

I  often tend to find myself working with artists to create custom art or buying one off pieces such as Balinese bed heads, Vintage artifacts or timber carved doors as a feature to hang on the wall in a living/dining space. In some homes, I have used gorgeous wallpaper to add to the vibe of the room, but it would have to really be something amazing and unique.

I think that's enough for you to digest for now.. Stay tuned for my post next week where I will carry on giving you the best tips on how to make your living room truly special!

6 Tips You NEED to Know Before Choosing a Builder!

ARE YOU THINKING OF RENOVATING? GEORGIA EZRA SHARES HER TOP 6 TIPS ALL AVID RENOVATORS NEED TO HEAR!

1. Choose your materials before getting prices from Builders!

STOP! Before you think about sending out those plans to get quoted, you need to choose every finish, fitting and material throughout your home. Plans are just simply not detailed enough and every element throughout your home (your sinks, tap-ware, basins, flooring options, door handles, tile scope etc) vary in cost from project to project. Without these detailed schedules, it is absolutely impossible for builders to accurately price your renovation.

Without this information you are lying in the dark, and your builders will still have hundreds of questions…It’s a “lose-lose” situation for all. The more transparency you bring to the quoting process, the less likely you will be faced with variation fees down the track, specifically when your builders are pricing on standard specifications. As a result, when you start choosing your materials you will learn that those higher priced items were ‘not allowed for’ and you can throw the original builders costs out the window - Sometimes you can be faced with 10’s of thousands in variation fees!

If you are better prepared and provide your builder with specifications, materials, finishes and fittings, they have to quote on those items - which means transparency, no budget blow-outs, less stress, reassurance and clarity of both the client and the builder. A “win- win” for all!

2. Learn to dissect your Pinterest board!

We all have a booklet or collection of inspiration images.. our dream kitchen or bathroom.. BUT when it is time to renovate, most of us struggle understanding what exactly it is about the images we love so much and HOW to make our spaces just like them - “the dream end vision.”

Learn to understand what elements about each image you like, dissect the image into material type and colour – e.g. flooring type, flooring finish and flooring colour, wall colour, bench-top finish, bench-top colour etc. This will allow you to break down the elements within your aspired space and recognize exactly what and how you wish to bring these into your own home.

3. Be realistic about your lifestyle and what is practical and functional for you and your family!

For most of us, renovating is a ‘one time only’ experience and so the pressure to do it right the first time can become overwhelming (to say the least!) We want our homes to look beautiful but most importantly they must be practical and functional for your family lifestyle.

Choosing a beautiful finish that will easily damage and quickly deteriorate is not necessarily the right answer for a family with young children. For example, although stunning, a cararra marble bench top will easily mark, scratch and stain after 1 week!

Make sure you are well informed about the materials you use and find out if they maintain well for years to come. Keep valuable questions in your mind during your research… Can the materials be cleaned easily, renewed if scratched or marked and how will they perform in the future?

4. On a shoestring budget? This is the time to be creative!

A small budget does not mean a simple result - get creative with your options and bring your space to life. Some of my best interiors had small budgets to work with, which caused me to think outside the box and become inventive with ways to apply materials as well as cleverly spreading budgets evenly over the overall plan.

We are all faced with the dilemma of wanting finishes that seem well beyond what we can afford. Don’t be discouraged as there are a number of ways to face your budget blues! I tend to suggest featuring a small area of a very nice material (that may be costly) and then collaborating this with something far more cost effective. i.e a feature tile splash-back in your bathroom with the rest being a more standard cost effective tile can give you a high end, beautiful end result. In the picture below, I created this gorgeous and effective splash-back using one of my all-time faves - the Tilesofezra aqua Morroccan Zellige Mosaic.

I also like to use cost effective tiles in creative ways. Use a subway tile in a herringbone pattern, use soft colour tones, like a soft blue and you will create the high-end wow factor you desire!

5. There is no such thing as right or wrong design, only your design!

I’m often asked to talk about ‘trends.' I don’t like this word at all. I believe every individual has his/her own unique style, taste and aesthetic.. following trends based on magazines, TV shows and what other interior designers are doing does not lend to expressing ones individuality! I say embrace your personal connection with styles, furniture, decorative pieces and colors and when insecurity creeps in your decision making, remind yourself that it is all subjective -there is no such thing as right or wrong design, only YOUR design!

6. Compare apples with apples!

When sending out your plans and specifications, I highly recommend allowing 2 to 3 builders to provide quotes. This way you are able to ensure that the prices that come back to you are competitive and that you are not being fooled. We are not builders and we are really relying on their professionalism and advice to guide us on this daunting experience. This comparison also ensures all builders’ quotes include the same allowances for these items, so you can easily compare quotes -  ‘apples with apples’.

I hope this helps!

Richmond house tour: GABBE & Tilesofezra are making waves on EST with paired-back simplicity

Studio Ezra Interior Style Living room sofa persian rug modern.jpg

It still feels surreal every time a project of mine is featured in a magazine or on a show. Today I’m feeling incredibly lucky and honoured to have again had my work featured in EST magazine - this time a renovated home in Richmond.

Studio Ezra Tiles of Ezra FL006 Aqua kitchen splashback.jpg

This interior features two of my passions, GABBE design as well as some of my magnificent tiles from Tilesofezra. This project was heaps of fun and by using a paired-back approach, I was able to let the home’s true essence and character shine through. I am totally obsessed with the end result and I feel so humbled that the incredible EST (I am independent and in no way asked to promote EST, I truly love and respect the publication) have acknowledged the magical allure of the home.

THIS WEEK WE ARE AT THE MAGNIFICENT

This week we take a look at Hotel Don Pepe located in Santa Marta, Colombia.

Santa Marta is South America’s oldest city and has the historical architecture to show for it. This hotel is heritage listed, which allows it to showcase the original brickwork and archways,

that are still intact. These elements have been reclaimed to enhance their relevance for today.

Hotel Don Pepe is made up of both original brickwork and tiles, as well as modern materials that make sure it stays true to the city’s colonial heritage.

CLICK HERE and watch the video below to see more from Hotel Don Pepe:

Georgia’s favourite design elements at Hotel Don Pepe- White, white and more white. What brings the different textured elements together are the tonal whites that cover many aspects from the travertine floors to the white painted walls, and to the  white washed timbers. The white keeps the space looking fresh and unique, and when juxtaposed to the original brick the space looks amazing.

Bring a piece of Hotel Don Pepe to your home in the following ways:

1. Plaster your walls with a rippling effect and paint them white. The texture keeps it interesting, and you can never go wrong with a classic white coat of paint.
2. Expose the lintels above your doorways. Lintels or archways can be what gives a space its own individual identity, so show them off! Paint or add a white wash to the surrounding timber to keep the the colour scheme consistent.
3. Use indoor plants such as palm trees to bring in some colour and help the space look lived in. Plants always help a home look homely.

4. Tilesofezra have a fabulous in stock floor tile range, create interest intrigue and an exotic result via floor tiles!

Magnificent Melbourne home by Georgia featured on EST

It’s not every day that one’s work gets featured on one of the best design platforms in the business – EST magazine. I adore EST! It epitomizes stunning, contemporary, cutting-edge design and has always been a major source of inspiration to me.

I feel so fortunate to have had my design on this Melbourne home showcased. What’s even more special is that I had the opportunity to incorporate my gorgeous, mosaic tiles from my side project Tilesofezra (available at www.tilesofezra.com) into this project.

Be sure to take a look at this space that truly embodies what we love at both GABBE design as well as Tilesofezra!

Natural light and it's importance on your health

When we enter a space, we are automatically aware of how we feel (either consciously or sub-consciously.) Different lighting schemes create different moods within spaces. Without natural light, a room will appear to be dark and moody, which in some instances may serve a purpose, but ultimately can have detrimental effects on a person's general wellness. But - what is the science behind this notion? Why does natural light have the incredible power to alter our moods? Let's delve a little further...

Natural sunlight causes our brain to release a hormone called Serotonin – this being the happy hormone and feel good neurotransmitter – so this means that without sunlight in our homes we are in fact exposing our selves to the risk of depression, anxiety and an array of other yucky symptoms.

When designing, depending on what mood we are trying to create, we will employ a combination of natural and artificial lighting to best achieve this aesthetic. But as a general rule, I do not believe artificial light is ever a better alternative to natural light.  I think natural light is always the best source in all circumstances within our offices, homes and interior spaces. Our bodies respond to it in such a positive way. We need natural daylight to function, just as we need darkness to help us go to sleep. It goes further than just aesthetics and more so about what our bodies respond to and need for the benefit of our emotional health and wellbeing. After all, what could possibly be more important than a healthy home and a healthy mind?

In the video below, I cover this concept in greater detail.

Sensory Design - The Secret to a Healthy Mind

Sensory Design - The Secret to a Healthy Mind

When introducing light and airy colours you completely change the mood of the home to a clear, clean, bright and uplifting space. Keeping this in mind, of course there are certain circumstances where I like to utilise a more moody palette. I do this by painting the walls and ceiling a deeper colour as well as using dim pendant or lamp shade to light the room. Introducing retail tones in the upholstery and furniture as well as soft moody casts of light and shadows creates an extremely romantic emotional experience for most. Lush deep drapery and rugs as well as coffee table books of choice will compliment this too. This ultimately makes anyone who enters the room feel a completely different sense of experience purely through the tone and light within the room.

Here are my 5 easy tips on how to improve the natural light in your home:

  1. Open the blinds and let some natural light and fresh air flow throughout your home every day.
  2. Introduce large mirrors which bounce the light around the room.
  3. Style and accessorise with neutral and lighter colours
  4. Paint your ceiling a shade lighter than the walls to make the ceiling height look taller.
  5. Declutter and remove as much as you can from shelving and walls.

Be sure to watch the video below where I talk about this exact topic

Employ these tips and I ensure you you will be on track in creating the healthiest and most desirable home possible; and hand in hand with a healthy home comes a healthy YOU!
